Catholic Charities faces David Catania at DC gay marriage hearing

Catholic Church's latest tactics in war against gay marriage:   Withhold Social Services
In its latest strategic hit against gay marriage,  the Catholic Church is threatening to withhold its social services from the District of Colombia.

Chuch officials through the Archdiocese of Washington DC claim that they cannot violate the basic tenets of their faith.

WASHINGTON - The Catholic Church is threatening to stop providing social service programs in the District. It's the latest twist in the fight over recognizing gay marriage.
Opposition to D.C.'s same-sex marriage bill now has some financial teeth in it. The Catholic Church, through the Archdiocese of Washington, is threatening to end a longstanding network of social services if the city council passes the bill. The church says morally, it has no other choice.

"The city is telling us 'if you want to continue doing business with the city and partner with us, you're going to have to violate your faith. We're dedicated to help with social services but we can't stop being Catholic,'" said Archdiocese of Washington Spokesperson Susan Gibbs.

We are a nation with division of church and state, right?  In my opinion, the Catholic Church in D.C. can take this stand if it so decides. It would not impact on the gay marriage bill in D.C., but it would mean a lessening of social services avail. in the District.  The Catholic Church is different than the U.S. Episcopal Church, and this is an example of how they possibly differ.

Good for them papists. Glad to see them to show some backbone.

Of course, if they do follow through, we will be told it is because they are bad guys, twisted values, etc.

Funny how one never hears of their good works. Just their sins.

Retrograde social force - if they want to defy the state in which they are residing, seize their assets. If they think they can defy the secular law of the land then they are acting illegally and then the state has full right stop seize their property as recompense. Then watch them bend their beloved dogma
