Washington, DC – Sunday was the 19th day of a hunger strike by the Indian Workers Congress (IWC). Protesters gathered at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Massachusetts Avenue to raise public awareness of the plight of 550 Indian welders and pipe fitters who were brought to New Orleans to cleanup the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Their complaints center on living conditions and visa restrictions.
