DC: MPD to Protesters, "Please Stay"
Forest Hills, DC - As many as 7 animal rights protesters with signs denouncing Huntingdon Life Sciences treatment of animals converged at a house on the 3500 block of Appleton Street. One protester even called out the specific address between chants as neighbors watched. Two MPD officers arrived on the scene. As the protesters packed up signs, one of the MPD officers who was retrieving plastic handcuffs from the trunk of a patrol car, repeatedly yelled: "Please Stay."
It was not clear what offense was committed that would require handcuffs. Nor, did it look prudent for the 2 officers to attempt to arrest the 7 protesters. The officers did not pursue as the protesters walked away.
DC Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh who lives about 3 blocks away has proposed legislation to strip away the public's right to conduct these types of protests. Cheh's attacks on free speech have consistently failed.
