Washington, DC – Pope Benedict XVI made a noontime trip from the White House to the Vatican Embassy in his Popemobile. Crowds lined the barricades along Pennsylvania Avenue. Many celebrated the Pontiff's visit and some protested the actions of the Church.

fwinstead, many thanks for the report and photos. It'd be great if you could tell us some more about it: how many people were there, and what was the atmosphere like?

People lined both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to Washington Circle. Police numbered in the hundreds from DC, Federal Agencies and Virginia.
The atmosphere was mostly cheerful. Even the protesters were tolerated by the those seeking a glimpse of the Pope.
