Photo: 32nd Street, NW.

Washington, DC – Weekend rains weakened the ground and uprooted trees in upper northwest DC on Monday. 32nd Street between Appleton and Brandywine Streets was the site of an uprooting tree that went from vertical to horizontal causing aerial utility lines to become ground wires. In the process, a utility pole was halved.

A few blocks away on Tilden Street between Connecticut Avenue and Reno Road, water roared over a retaining wall at the base of a 30 foot slope. Around the corner on Reno Road another dislodged tree was held skyward by more robust utility lines as Metropolitan Police kept the northbound lane blocked waiting for utility crews to remove the hazard as commuters sought a
route home.

This Pepco map shows electrical outages by zip code in DC and adjacent Maryland.
