"This is why I have taken the decision to be a candidate for the office of president of the Republic of Poland."

President Lech Kaczynski died in a plane crash in Russia on April 10 along with 95 other people, mostly senior government ministers and officials.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski was the leader of the opposition in Parliament, head of the the conservative law and justice part, PiS.  Kaczynski was Prime Minister from 2006-2007. Jaroslaw Kaczynski was active in the Solidarity movement in the early 19880s and helped create the PiS party with his brother Lech.

The party is conservative on social and moral issues but left-leaning on the economy, favoring more state spending and opposing privatisation. Jaroslaw Kaczynski keeps tight control of his party, which lags PO by more than 10 percentage points in opinion polls.
