A deaf and dumb girl was gang raped by Sri Lankan Army
Tamils in Sri Lanka need help and they need it sooner than later. Stories like these have been happening to Tamils for several years. So called the "terrorists" group LTTE was trying to keep the Sri Lankan Army away from Tamils' regions so that incidents like this would not happen.
If the world sees a rebel force with a political outlook as not a feasible solution, would it be time to act responsibly to derive a practical solution to the 60 years ongoing Tamils oppression?
UN is hiding its head in the sand and pretending nothing is wrong even though it could not have free access to the captured areas or war zones. "It is happening over there so it would not matter here" attitude is the basis for much carnage happen in this world.
Young woman raped in Jaffna [TamilNet, Tuesday, 17 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]A deaf and dumb girl was gang raped by a group of SLA soldiers in Meesaalai west in Jaffna yesterday around 12 noon said Chavakachcheri hospital sources. She was admitted today to the hospital after she had attempted to immolate herself by pouring a barrel of kerosene on her body.
The girl, S. Selvarani 28, was on her way to visit a friend on her bicyle when she had been stopped by a group of SLA soldiers who had gagged and bound her and had then gang raped her.
When the soldiers had let her go the girl had rushed home and had doused herself with a barrel of kerosene.
Her mother had discovered her when she was about to set herself on fire. The mother had calmed the girl and had found out about how the soldiers had sexually assaulted her.
She was then brought to the Chavakachcheri hospital this morning by her mother and relatives.
The Sri Lankan Police in Jaffna is yet to record her statement.
A Sri Lankan Police constable attempted to rape a 3 month pregnant woman in Thirunelvely in Jaffna, last Saturday. He was caught and severely assaulted by a group of local civilians.
Incidents like these are the root cause for a rebel group to exist within Tamil community. If the world is following protocols, and the Tamils' sufferings are minute for the world, what option do you suggest for Tamils to survive in such a hostile environment?
The Sri Lankan Army released a press note to cover up the issue.
SLA comments on Jaffna rape [TamilNet, Monday, 23 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Sri Lankan army in Jaffna formally responded to the rape of the deaf and dumb woman,S. Selvarani, 28, in Meesalai on March 16, in a press note put out by the Palaly Sri Lankan Security Forces head quarters yesterday.
The SLA press note points out five items regarding the allegation that the young woman was gang raped by a group of Sri Lankan soldiers.
The following is the English translation of the five items in the SLA's press note.
"1. No complaint was lodged with the Police or any legal body that this woman was raped.
2. As the woman is deaf and dumb and was blindfolded when she was raped, she is not in a position to identify the suspects.
3. The higher echelons of the army categorically deny that any soldier was involved in such an act.
4. Medical circles say that as there was very heavy bleeding from the woman's vagina, there is no trace of fluids from the suspect in her vagina to prove the involvement of the suspected person(s) in the act.
5. The reason for the continuous bleeding was a big wound inside her vagina and she had to be taken to the operation theatre where it (the wound) had to be stitched close by doctors. The wound had been caused by a long, thick blunt object which had been forcibly inserted into the woman's vagina. Doctors say that it cannot be concluded from this that the woman was raped."
This SLA press note was also published in the Jaffna daily Uthayan.
Jaffna hospital sources declined to comment officially on the SLA statement.
The Tamils don't need cricket training; Tamils don't need hand-shake-smile political pictures.
Tamils want to live in freedom; Tamils want to decide their own destiny; Tamils want to wipe out torture, rape and killings out from their lives;
Is it too much ask? It has been in Sri Lanka for last 60 years.
