The Deciding Factor
By Muhammad Osman
January 7, 2011 (NAIROBI) – Over 15,000 Southern Sudanese are expected to turn up at eight polling stations across Kenya between 9 and 15 January to vote in a crucial referendum vote on the possible secession of their semi-autonomous region from north Sudan.
The plebiscite is the terminus of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which in 2005 ended nearly half a century of intermittent civil war between the predominantly Muslim north and the south, where most people ascribe to Christianity or traditional beliefs.
Theres much speculation and anxiety as to whether Southern Sudan shall become a sovereign state and tommorow Sunday 9th January, on this date lies the deciding factor and history re-made either with a lose or a win but the least the southern sudanese expect is a win: which implies that they gunner atleast 50% plus one vote and if by any chance they reach a deadlock the law orders that a new referendum is held, and from the looks of things the southerners seem detemined to break away judging from the spirited arrivals of their citizenry from all over the world just to cast that all important vote. Despite the fact that the voter turn out seems good enough there have been some setbacks,(just like a good marriage the divorce never misses its own charades) which range from voters being bought out of their voting rights since most of were former refugees barely surviving on donor aid to some of the southern sudanese not being registered due to several factors. Now what is left is for the people to decide for themselves and let us see what the future holds for this promising nation as we hope for peace and prosperity during the seven day period and long afterwards. So Help Them God!
