NP Rank:
Democrats will continue to be Democrats
Van Hollen is not my favorite representative as he comes from a community that has the highest concentration of scientists and engineers in the country, and does very little for it. It is an outrageously stupid thing to say that “the White House is committed to maintaining the Democratic Majority.” That is like saying the President is committed to being a Democrat! Well, I hope so. I am not so sure because I remember the ridiculous behavior by Pelosi and Reid at the early stages of the administration that did nothing to help the President achieve a level of bipartisanship that he sought. I can imagine the President thinking at that time, “I will remember them when it is time for their reelection. I won’t show up.”
“Democrats engage in 'circular firing squad'
Van Hollen offered this defense of the White House: "I know for a fact that the president and the White House [team] are absolutely committed to maintaining a Democratic majority in the House," he said. "They know that the future success of the president's agenda depends on a Democratic majority in the House, and they also know that the day after the election, the elections will be interpreted as a referendum on the president's policies -- whether they like it or not."”

The President will be there no matter what. I think he will go into the mode of being an executive who carries out his duties with the cast before him. He will be less assertive and more responsive. He will address the budget deficit and make difficult decisions to cut the size of government. He will support Republican initiatives to re-energize the private sector.
A battle will ensue over taxes. He will try to get that behind him before November - roll back the Bush tax cuts.
