Derek and Alex King: Brothers Free from Prison & Looking Ahead
Derek and Alex King, convicted of murdering their father, Terry King, with a baseball bat in 2001, are free from prison.
After killing their father, the King brothers tried to destroy evidence of the crime by burning down their house.Derek and Alex King then ran away with a family friend with whom Derek King was living named Rick Chavis, who was a child molester. (King Brothers wiki- redirects to Terry King)
Rick Chavis was initially tried for the murder of Terry King, but was acquitted; Derek and Alex King, who initially confessed to the crime, were ultimately convicted of third-degree murder. Derek and Alex King were 12 and 13 years old respectively when they committed the crime, and the King brothers were tried as adults.
The boys were 13 and 12 when they smashed their father's skull with a baseball bat as he slept at their home in northern Florida. The boys then ran away with a convicted child molester who had befriended them.
Now free and enrolled in junior college, Derek and Alex King are having trouble leaving the past behind: it's not easy to get a job when you're nationally famous for killing your dad.
Alex said that people should find hope in what has happened to him and his brother in the eight years since the murder.
“Even though people do make mistakes, even though they make errors, there is still hope,” he said.
