Derrion Albert: Video Captured Chicago Teen Beaten to Death
A Chicago teen, Derrion Albert, was beaten to death by other teenagers on Thursday September 24. A girl captured the beating and provided Chicago police with the footage to help identify the perpetrators. Eugene Bailey, 18, was charged without bail. Police has charged other 3 teens for their part in the beating: Silvanus Shannon, 19; Eric Carson, 16; and Eugene Riley, 18.
FOX has the video. The footage appeared on YouTube but was repeatedly taken down by FOX.
Derrion Albert, 16, was punched, kicked, and struck in the Far South Side's Roseland neighborhood around 3 pm. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but was pronounced dead at 6:17 pm. The fight involved only fists, feet and boards; no knives or guns were used. Albert was struck in the head by a board.
Milton Massy, Director of Agape Community Center, saw the melee on surveillance tape.
"The whole incident took a span of four minutes," Massy said. "Kids were coming from the east and the west and converging in the middle of the street. Kids were also gathering in the empty lot next to the center."
Massy said he saw one child hit another in the back of the head, causing him to fall to the ground. He then saw at least three or four teens beating another.
Derrion Albert's mom said witnesses told her he was "trying to help another student and kind of got mixed in with the crowd of the fight and he was hit.”
A senior who witnessed the whole thing says the melee lasted less than five minutes.
Derrion Albert's family was squeamish about watching the video footage, and some where not able to make it through.
Police ask anyone who can identify the people in the video to call Area Two of the Chicago Police Department at 312-747-8272.

Where is the moral of these kids, who is rasing them, and instilling values in them. It doesnt make any sense that this child had to lose his life due to the ignorance of these children. it hurts my heart to have to see a child beaten and adults standing by not getting involved, it use to be such a thing as protecting our own regardless of the surroundings. I would like to hear the excuses of the adults whom sat bye and watch this child be beaten to death, if it was your child you would want someone to intervene i know that i would. i also believe that those whom were invovled should be tried as adults and sentenced to life in prison, that is only fair it would not bring him back but they need to pay for there actions and have there lifes taken away from them.

Why in the world the adults didn't come out from their stores/homes and DO SOMETHING!!! These are monsters that have NO VAULE for their life, therefore they could careless about anyone else life! I want to know what are the parents who kids were involved doing and how are they raising them. To me it looks like they are a bunch of animals.I am so pissed that NO ONE STOPPED THIS!!! If I was the victim parents I would own that street (sue all of them) I am just so upset at this, I will continue to pray for his parents and that community. The adults need to stand up in that community because it is FALLING!!!

I am a public school teacher in Ohio. I know that this is not just a problem in Chicago's schools, but it is a bigger problem there due to circumstances that children like Derrion fight their whole lives. He was described as an honor student. He didn't get to that achievement level on his own. He obviously had people in his life who cared for him deeply and guided him to do the right things. These others who took Derrion's life did not have that same thing going for them. It does not in anyway give them an excuse for such a dastardly thing that they did. However, it punctuates the need for parents/guardians of all children to guide their children and teach them right from wrong. Derrion himself was blessed to have loving, caring people in his life. They are responsible, upstanding, good parents. It is too bad that the people who uphold the violence did not have anyone who cared enough about them to teach them what it means to be a good citizen and how to treat people. Regarding the adults who watched this crime...maybe next time it will be them or their loved ones being beaten. Maybe that is what it will take for them to get involved and take back the streets of their city. That is the only way things will ever change for the better. Right now, no one seems to care and that is why things have progressed to this level of violence. Stand up for yourself Chicago! Take back your streets, your neighborhood and your sense of safety and security. Raise your children! Don't just send them out into the streets to live a life of crime and posess a lack of concern for others. Let's all do our jobs to help our communities thrive.

Wow. That's really all you can say after hearing this story. What is to become of our children? What happened to our children? Why are parents not doing their jobs? I am so sick and tired of innocent people being killed because parents are not raising their children. This is senseless and heartless and my prayers are with this family. I hope these jokers burn in hell for this; absolute insanity. I think the death penalty is in order hear. This was brutal and totally senseless.

This is completely ridiculous. The community and the students and the rest of the city needs to come together to provide support for this poor family. I am from Omaha, NE and a school recently lost a student, though not at the hands of violence, the entire city came together to honor this student and the family. Changes need to be made to stop these awful things from happening but in order for changes to happen the entire community needs to be a support system for each other. In Omaha there was a moment of silence at a football game. Ribbons were sold in order to raise funds for the family. The opposing team also did these things to remember him. Schools all around the city raised money for the family and to create a permanent memorial at the school. If people don't start caring, these children aren't going to start caring either. This poor boy suffered a horrible fate and yet anger and frustration is what it has caused. Take some time to mourn for the loss of him and to help each other move on.

I have raised a son and a daughter. My son is rare just like Derrion. My son is very well grounded in his Christian faith. When he was growing up I always made sure he and his sister were in church. When I could not attend church'' because I was the head of household" I made sure that someone came and took them to church. There were times when I was challenged by my son. But I made sure that I overcame those challenges with him. My son is now in the millitary and he has moved up in rank. I want to tell Chicago MEN AND WOMEN whats up? You all need to step up to the plate. Derrion blood has spilled now do something. We are down south praying hard for our brothers and sisters up north.

This is extremely tragic and saddening, unfortunately this is behavior that happens all over America with this younger generation. Everyone asks what is wrong with these kids and why aren't their parents teaching them better? It's b/c everyone has become lazy and scared when it comes to raising and disciplinging their children. I am a firm believer that children are a product of their enviroment!! It's sad that it in this day in age that not only do children have no sense of responsibility or respect, but it appears that neither do the parents.

Phone footage showing a group of teens viciously kicking and striking a 16-year-old honors student with splintered railroad ties has ramped up pressure on Chicago officials to address chronic violence that has led to dozens of deaths of city teens each year. In a historical context, death was a part of life – the average person would witness several violent deaths including family members several times in a given year. Still, there's no need to watch the Derrion Albert footage – there is a definitive need to do something about violence around schools. There's also speculation that the violence around the city of Chicago (not exactly the most peaceful place on earth) may have soured the Chicago Olympic bid. Many would rather give payday loans to see his killers brought to justice, than to see the video again.
