The Devils Head Ski Resort in Wisconsin was the scene of a chair lift accident yesterday when an emergency brake on a lift failed and the cable rolled backwards to cause many chairs to slam in to each other at the base station. Fourteen people were injured, three of them seriously.
It was around 7pm when many skiers and snowboarders were on the chairlift and witnesses said that many people jumped from the lift if they could, some from as high as 20 feet, so as not to slam backwards in to the base. There were no critical injuries luckily.
Many were stuck on the lift for two hours while emergency personnel stopped the lift and helped the injured. The cause of the malfunction is being investigated today.
No one was available from the ski area to comment. Devil's Head Resort is located about 20 miles northwest of Madison.
