NP Rank:
Dictators v Mass Protests and Internet-- Who will win?
Today protests in Egypt over president Hosni Mubarak, who has been in office 30 years, continue. The protesters are trying to force Mubarak from office. Most protesters are young and dressed in western style clothing but some are strict Islamists of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The question is will the protests drive the president from office? ass protests in Tunisia last recently drove the president from power and from the country. However in Iran a few years ago massive protests failed to force a government change and many were killed and jailed. Which way will Egypt go.
That mostly depends on Mubarak and more so on the Egyptian army. If Mubarak orders the army to crush the protests with force, guns and tanks, the dictator will stay in power. So it will depend on whether Mubarak will order hundreds to be shot and then if the army will follow such orders.

No, whether the protesters succeed mostly depends on the US and other nations which have been supporting Mubarak's regime. For thirty years the US has viewed the Egyptian voice as a vital US interest in the middle East, but these protests have now discredited Mubarak as the voice of Egypt. It's the same reason Americans continue to support genocide in West Papua, because it will take another 40 years for the US to mine the last of the Papuan gold the US government will continue to support the Indonesian military occupation of that nation. But in Egypt the US interest has probably just shifted from Mubarak to the people of Egypt.

Not true. The US and most western nations have opposed Iran and North Korea and they still have dictators. If the Egyptian army kills a few thousand protesters the protests will stop. And other nations will not use military force to help the people.

It's time President Hosni Mubarak listened to the will of the people and resigned. He should hold elections and run again and if the people truly want him like he thinks they do, then they'll re-elected him democratically and then he can say he's the rightful President not like right now.
