Doctors Without Borders Responds to Haiti Earthquake MSF in Haiti
One of the main and largest non-profit organizations working in Haiti helping earthquake victims is Doctors Without Borders also known by its French name Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)
Now, not only is Doctors Without Borders (MSF) responding to the earthquake crisis it is facing immense challenges of its own (see video). Doctors Without Borders is the largest non government NGO operating in Haiti and the MSF workers there know the country well.
Doctors Without Borders is sending more than 70 MSF staff and portable hospital and surgical tents and facilities, to offset the earthquake damage to existing MSF medical facilities. Plus, MSF has to account for some its own staff. Currently, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) already has 800 people working in Haiti and not all of them are accounted for.
Stephano Zannini an MSF senior staff member was out on the streets of Haiti last night
"The situation is chaotic," he said. "I visited five medical centers, including a major hospital, and most of them were not functioning. Many are damaged and I saw a distressing number of dead bodies. Some parts of the city are without electricity and people have gathered outside, lighting fires in the street and trying to help and comfort each other. When they saw that I was from MSF they were asking for help, particularly to treat their wounded. There was strong solidarity among people in the streets."
MSF says most of the injuries are trauma related, broken burns and burns. The facility is Port-Au-Prince the capital has treated at least 300 with hundreds and hundreds more being treated in other facilities across Haiti. That number is expected rise as recovery and rescue efforts ramp up.
Doctors Without Borders which started in France has a long and deep relationship with the people of Haiti. Here is a video giving you a sense of the work MSF does in Haiti. Doctors Without Borders is completely supported by donations for its efforts in Haiti and around the world. It does not take money from governments so it can remain completely independent. Lots of other NGO do great work but MSF is unique in its non-political approach.
One final thing to remember: Long after the cameras are gone and the world's attention drifts elsewhere, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) will continue to serve the people of that lovely troubled land
