Tragically it looks like Canada is catching up to the US

As a percentage of the population we already have.

The real problem is it will cost many thousands more lives to defeat the Taliban, and many years,
This will hurt Obama in the next election.

War casualties are a problem for any government if they can't convince the public that it's a worthwhile cause. That's why I think the Canadian Government has decided to cease Canada's combat role in 2011.

If the US is still there in 2012 I think Obama will face opposition in the primaries from a far left democrat..
If Canada has an election this fall will the war be an issue.

I doubt that the war will be an issue as Parliament as a whole has agreed to withdraw from it.s combat role in 2011.
The two major parties, Conservative and Liberal, have agreed to the involvement in this war. The Liberals joined the US with its effort and we had boots on the ground in January 2002. The Conservative Party extended the mandate with the approval of Parliament and agreed to end it in 2011.
The economy, deficit and party ideology will be the major issues. I think another factor will be which party is best suited to lead us out of the recession.

It will not happen bit a formal Conservative/New Democrat coalition could be good for Canada.

Will never happen. Ideologically they are too far apart.
