DoD Operation Enduring Freedom Casualty Update as of 10am 1 Oct
Nine more soldiers pay the ultimate price in Afghanistan, bringing the total to 1299.
Six soldiers died during the first month of Iraqi Dawn raising the total to 4427.
The United States is one month away from its mid-term elections today. The spin is incredible by both sides. Attack ads are the order of the day. Nobody seems to run on issues anymore. The President has started a backyard neighborhood campaign.
Meanwhile Congress has left town without a vote on the Bush Tax Cuts. There is the discussion of whether the tax cuts should be extended to all Americans or only to those Americans making less than $250,000.
The recent elections in Afghanistan left one third of the polling places closed and there are, once again allegations of widespread fraud.
Pakistan is in disarray. Major NATO supply routes have been blocked in Pakistan, an apparent retaliation for drone attacks and NATO air strikes inside Pakistan. Musharraf has warned of another military coup and is starting his own political party and return to Pakistan.
Bob Woodward's book "Obama's Wars has raised questions as to whether or not President Obama's heart is in the Afghanistan war and suggests a major rift in the Administration's National Security Team.
Regardless of priorities for the mid-term elections, the Administrations apparent rift and Rahm Emanuel's departure, we should remember that there are still 100,000 U.S. troops and another 40,000 NATO troops deployed to Afghanistan.
Those troops deserve a clear mission and our support, regardless of partisan politics. Take a moment today and think of the nine soldiers killed in Afghanistan this past week. All of them had a family that will miss them.
Here are this week's figures:

I am torn on Afghanistan. Of course we need to support the troops. I think we should remove them from harms way in Afghanistan other than to pursue terrorists and their supporters. Concentrate force on the al Qaeda; finish up and get out of there.

The problem with that is, where is Al Quaeda? Where are they doing their planning? It could be in your neighborhood for all we know.
I agree without a real mission the troops are in harms way. It is amazing that there is so much disagreement among the Pentagon, the Generals, the National Security Council and the Administration.
As they used to say in the old Army, sh--t or get off the pot lol. Unfortunately I see the makings of another Vietnam, without a national draft.
