DADT Repealed: Obama Will Sign on December 22

Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) has been repealed by both the House and the Senate, and the bill is headed for President Barack Obama's desk. Obama has indicated that he will sign on Wednesday, December 22.

Don't Ask Don't Tell is still technically in effect, though its days are numbered. DADT will be lifted as soon as the PResident, the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff inform Congress in writing that new policies and directives are in place to manage the change, and that such policies will not affect military readiness, recruitment or retention.

Don't Ask Don't Tell Reaction Videos

Opponents and supporters of DADT, including servicemen and -women who left or were kicked out of the military because of their sexuality, have taken to Youtube to post their reactions. We have included a selection of those DADT reaction videos below.

So, for the time being the restrictions will remain on the books, though it's unclear how fully they will be enforced. Some people believe gay discharge cases will be dropped as soon as Obama signs the law. Military leaders, who have been divided on the issue, gave indications that the policy change will be aggressively pursued.

The change in policy will not occur until President Obama, Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen inform Congress in writing that the military is prepared to do and has drafted the necessary policies and regulations.

Another advance for gays in America. However, what are we going to do with the Flag Officers who made stupid statements declaring their bigotry and lack of understanding? Fundamental to the USA is liberty, justice, and equal treatment for all.
