Doonesbury Slams Dem Lobbyist for Defending Ivory Coast Dictator
Doonesbury artist Garry Trudeau slams Democratic Strategist Lanny Davis on his Lobbying for Ivory Coast dictator Laurent Gbagbo in a six-figure deal. Lanny not liking this, wanted a Retraction from Trudeau, what he got was a very confrontational e-mail.
From Chris Frates:
Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau and lobbyist Lanny Davis are exchanging biting emails and copying POLITICO.
The tussle began last Friday when Trudeau skewered Davis in the comic strip for representing Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo. Davis emailed the cartoonist asking for a correction, arguing that he was working to ease Gbagbo out of power — not defending a dictator.
On Thursday, in an email he shared with POLITICO, Trudeau responded to Davis:
“It doesn’t much concern me why or how you withdrew from your contract with the loathsome Laurent Gbagbo. Your view of yourself as peacemaker notwithstanding, I think it’s fair to say that Gbagbo didn’t send you $300,000 to arrange his own exit. Indeed, he murdered countless countrymen trying to avoid exactly that outcome,” Trudeau wrote.
“You may frame your resignation as a gesture of principle if you’d like, but most people know a face-saving exit strategy when they see one,” he added. “And retaining $150,000 in ‘expenses’ from a man accused of crimes against humanity certainly suggests your sense of honor had its limits.”

Lanny Davis Running P.R. For Laurent Gbagbo, Sanctioned Ivory Coast “Strongman”
Over in the Ivory Coast, things are not going well. Last month, incumbent president-slash-strongman Laurent Gbagbo lost an election to Alassane Ouattara that was deemed fair and square by international observers. Since then, however, Gbagbo has refused to step down, and has instead stepped up the violent suppression of his political opponents. Gbagbo is currently in a standoff with U.N. peacekeeping forces, who have refused his order to decamp from the country because “more than 50 people have been killed in recent days in Ivory Coast” and there are “hundreds of reports of people being abducted from their homes at night by armed assailants in military uniforms.” And now, he’s earned sanctions from the United States State Department as well.
Naturally, Gbagbo has retained the services of homunculoid flack Lanny Davis. We go live now, to Justin Elliot in the Salon War Room, who notes that “even for Davis, taking on Ivory Coast leader and flagrant human rights violator Laurent Gbagbo as a client, as he did this week, seems to cross some kind of line”:
