A cash machine became a big hit this week after it started paying out twice as much money as it should.

The ATM, outside a supermarket in they city of Hull in northern England, began spewing out double the money on Tuesday afternoon and continued doing so for several hours, drawing a crowd of hundreds eager to cash in on the mistake.

Those requesting the maximum daily withdrawal of £300 were being given £600 and a receipt for £300.

'People were calling their mates up and telling them to get down there' a passer-by said.

After several hours the machine finally ran out of money.

Payzone, a company that administers ATMs, would not comment in detail on the incident but said it appeared one of its machines had malfunctioned.

Police said those who had benefited could face charges but only if the operator complained.

Reminds me of a time when I was visiting Seattle (from Vancouver) with my mom and she took out some money from an ATM -- and the machine spat out a receipt reading a bank balance of $999,999.99! That was pretty exciting for a few seconds. But this is way better -- the machine was actually doubling the real money it was dispensing. Nice.

I actually came across something similar many years ago when ATMs were first introduced to Ireland. The ATMs had two trays, one containing £5 notes while the other contained £10 notes (we no longer use £ here in Ireland) ... what happened is that the person who loaded the ATM with money put the wrong notes in the wrong trays so if you asked to withdraw £5 you got £10 (the opposite was also true). The people who were left short were quick to complain while those who got extra money were slow to deaw attention to their good fortune. I was short changed!
