Dr. Morgentaler, soon to be a receiptent of the Order of Canada, has some Canadians outraged, while some Canadian applaud this decision.

Dr. Morgentaler, a Montreal Doctor who performed abortions for for 40 years, seen as a women's rights activist is being accused of being Dr. Death by the Christian right, who had in the past threatened him with death and firebombed his office, but is seen on the other hand as a hero by women's rights groups who hail him as a saviour for his work on behalf of women.

Certainly a quandary to the selection committee who are being protested on one hand, yet congratulated with the other.

Honour out of Order?

Rideau Hall sparks debate by recognizing abortionist

By TERRY PALDWELL, THE CANADIAN PRESS

The naming of abortion-rights activist Dr. Henry Morgentaler to the Order of Canada is being met with both applause and outrage.

The Harper government was quick to distance itself from the decision.

Morgentaler, best known for taking the issue of abortion rights all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, is among 75 people who will receive the prestigious national honour.

"The Conservative government is not involved in either deliberations or decisions with respect to which individuals are appointed to the Order of Canada," said Dimitri Soudas, a spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper. "Rideau Hall makes these appointments based on the recommendations of the Advisory Council for the Order which is chaired by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada."

Morgentaler was instrumental in having the high court strike down Criminal Code restrictions on abortion on Jan. 28, 1988, making Canada the only western democracy with no criminal sanctions of any kind against abortion.

Funny use of capitalization in this article.  Christian Right and Saviour should not be capitalized.

Daniel, it has been changed, just for YOU! Why? Because I want you to get your Arse down to Colonnade Pizza and order the Deluxe, then eat it and report back to me on how good it is.  Cause I am stuck in Foodie Hell out here on the Left Coast.

If you have a problem with use of capitals, don't read my articles.  I use capitals for emphasis.  Barry uses them because his hand falls and hits random keys.   The word Christan and Saviour can be capitalized.  The word Saviour refers to ones Lord thus it is fitting to capitalize it.  Barry is from some nomadic faith where he worships the 3 weeks of summer of the great white north...

Thanks Castro for the visit.  I agree controversial, but to each, their own.

I agree that it is surprizing that this has hapenned with a right-wing, pro-christian, conservative government. However, I think this is great for womens rights and, in particular, womens right to make decisions for themselves.

The thing is Maleger, our Ruling Government Party and Prime  Minister have no say in choosing who receives any medals, that is up to a selection committee, and his personal objections, which ever they may be, have to remain personal when the Law is Law.  The Prime Minister represents all Canadians, even those who oppose this award to be given to Dr. Morgentaler.

Thank's for the visit and comments.

Barry Artiste, I like this story. It's good stuff.  And so goes the world.  Conservatives would throw him in jail because he destroyed many potential taxpayers.

Thanks Politisite, for the comments and flag, though True the potential for future taxpayers is lost, perhaps potential criminals or unemployed as well.
