No Deal for Josh Brown

Frank Hughes at Seahawks Insider gives us an update on the Josh Brown deal. According to Hughes’ post, Brown's agent said no deal was able to be reached and “he did not sound optimistic about where things stand with negotiations.” The main issue is compensation. Our blogger supposes that “Brown is seeking something near what Adam Vinatieri signed with Indy, around $2.5 million per season” and the Seahawks are coming in under that amount.

Brown’s agent said “he has no future negotiations scheduled, though he was confident he would meet with the Seahawks at the combine” in Indianapolis. One source says that he “would not be surprised to see the Seahawks let Brown go and then go after a kicker in the later rounds.” Hughes believes a talented kicker could be found in the draft, “the same way that Brown was drafted after letting Rian Lindell go.”

Ballard Manning’s/Denny’s Granted Landmark Status

Peggy Strudivant, blogging for At Large in Ballard, reports on the Landmark Board meeting concerning the former Manning's/Denny's site. Residents of Ballard petitioned the board to give the “Googie” style building landmark status. “The very idea of landmarking a former Denny's seemed to draw the requisite amount of scorn and bile to make for a story that interested readers in Tacoma” and as far as Los Angeles. There were many local reporters in the room “from the daily papers and television stations,” and it was pure drama, with over 100 people in the room.

The review “started with a “one hour presentation coordinated by smooth-faced lawyer John McCullough,” during which Larry Johnson argued that “the Space Needle is a landmark and the Denny's can't be compared to the Space Needle,” expert Tim Rood dismissed the architect as “inferior,” and Art Historian Judith Sobol claimed the Manning's design “is in no way Googie” and that Seattle is not a “Googie” city. Then response came “from citizens who want the site preserved and a few who thought it didn’t meet the criteria.” But the highlight of the evening, writes Strudivant in her post, was original architect Charlie Jenner, who said, “That was the best job I ever got into,” and explained how he sought out “the unusual materials” and created the “greatest vaulted ceiling in Seattle.” After all was said and done, the final vote by the board was 6-3 in favor of the designation.

Bellevue’s T-Mobile Leads Transformation in Home Communication

Brier Dudley’s most recent post announces that the Bellevue-based T-Mobile USA is “dramatically stepping up its effort to take over your home phone service with a new Internet calling plan debuting in Seattle and Dallas.” There are countless Internet phone services nowadays, many of which are free, but “T-Mobile believes it can lure customers with its quality of service and pricing.” The service requires broadband Internet, a $50 router, and jacks for standard landline phones. When you sign up, “T-Mobile will switch your home phone number to the new service, provide a dialtone and handle all your calls through its network.” It also identifies your home address “so it can provide 911 location services in emergencies.”

Their plan is called the “Talk Forever Home Phone,” and it’s “different from the Hotspot@Home Wi-Fi phone service T-Mobile rolled out last year.” T-Mobile calls this move a “platform” for the home and the company “wants to make more of the advanced features of mobile phones available on home phones.” Says senior vice president of marketing David Beigie, “The bottom line is we think it's yet another innovation from T-Mobile that really transforms how people will be communicating in the home.” And given current state of the economy, writes Dudley in his post, Beigie thinks it’s a good time for people to look at their total communications spending.
