President Felipe Calderon's pressure on drug dealers has caused all kinds of violence, executions, vengance and kidnappings. Corruption has manifested itself in many of the situations. It is believed kidnappers received Batista's schedule information.

Batista, a Cuban-American from Miami who is credited with negotiating the release of people abducted by Colombian rebels, was snatched when he stepped outside the restaurant after answering a cell phone call, Coahuila state attorney general's office said.

No ransom has been demanded, police said.

The local attorney general's office said Batista had been invited by state police to give talks on security amid Mexico's gruesome drug war, which has killed more than 5,300 people this year, double the 2007 level.

"We don't believe this was a normal kidnapping, more like the work of drug gangs wanting to show their power," said an official at the state attorney general's office. "Batista was giving seminars, he wasn't negotiating anyone's release."

The Drug dealers and Gangs seem to be way to confident and maybe even to powerful.

Thanks Paschen

That's what I'm afraid of.

Unfortunately the out come may not be one that is wanted. It's a shame is drug war has got to be so out of control in Mexico. The corruption in the government is mind blowing to me. You really don't know who you can trust, who to go to for help  especially with the Human Sex Trafficking.

The fact that no ransom has been demanded does not look good I think

Corruption is part of a way of life, starting with small children.  They go to confession, pay a small fine, make some incantations and receive absolution.  How is that different from bribing cops, politicians when they grow up?  No way would squeaky-clean government and police as in Scandinavia, ever be accepted by Catholic Latinos.  Nothing in Latin America is illegal-- some things are more expensive than others.

Yes, paying penitence... bribes...... it's all part of a culture.
