Around 1pm a firetruck screamed down Burrard on the way to Main and Hastings, to what was a three-alarm fire. Police believe everyone got out safely, and so far only minor injuries have been reported.

- The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

Flames can be seen coming out of a second storey unit, and heavy smoking pouring out several windows on the second and third floors.

Vancouver Fire crews say sprinkler systems in the building did not activate.

Witnesses called News1130 reporting huge flames and smoke visible at the hotel, which is adjacent to the Balmoral Hotel. The fire broke out at the back of the building and spread between the 2nd and 4th floors.

Some more info here.

They say - A cigarette left burning in a room full of spray-paint may have sparked a three-alarm blaze that broke out in a social housing facility.

I blogged about this, but I never had the time and energy to sell the photos or post to a site like this. My co-worker called 911 then I went into the alley and took some photos with my Blackberry before the emergancy crews arrived.

I joined and added my photos and the youtube video.

It was definitely a cigarette in a room full of spray paint cans... That was the talk of the alley or the neighborhood.
