Dubai Plane Crash: UPS Plane Down Near Emirates Highway (Photo)
A UPS Plane Crashed Near the Emirates Highway in Dubai on September 3
Al Arabiya TV reports that a plane, believed to be a Boeing 747-400, crashed in the United Arab Emirates city. The crash was known as Flight 6 and it was headed for the UPS depot in Cologne, Germany.
The plane had taken off around 18:40pm from the Dubai International Airport, and was diverted to the military camp after reporting trouble. Flights in and out of Dubai have not been affected by this crash.
The original reports stated that the plane came down on the highway, but it in fact crashed near the highway, most likely in an area known as Silicon Oasis. Al Arabiya TV confirms that the plane caught fire, hit a covered parking lot and then bounced and crashed along the ground.
The plane was on fire along with several cars on the highway, but there have been no injuries reported from the ground at the time of publication.
The General Manager of Civil-Aviation, Saif al-Suwaidi, spoke to Dubai TV about the incident:
"The pilot reported fire and smoke in the cockpit and was instructed to return to Dubai. After failing to land at the airport, the plane disappeared from radar screens and was found later (at the crash site)," Suwaidi said.
There were two crew members on board, and both bodies have been recovered from the wreckage.
"This incident is very unfortunate and we will do everything we can to find the cause," UPS' airline and international operations manager Bob Lekites said in a statement.
"Our thoughts go out to the crew members involved in the incident and their families."
It crashed about 20 kilometres away from Dubai's International Airport, near to a UAE army camp.
Witnesses said the UPS plane went down near Academic City & Global Village, on the intersection of the Al-Ain Dubai Highway.
According to an official that spoke to Al Arabiya, the plane was attempting to land at Dubai's Airport, when a technical problem on board caused the crash. A fire broke out on the plane as it was attempting to land. However, it has now been determined that the plane had just taken off from the airport.
The official United Arab Emirates WAM news agency is reporting that the aircraft came down in an unpopulated area, although it was near a residential district.

The plane narrowly missed our apartment building in neighbouring Dubai Silicon Oasis before crashing. I heard the roar of the plane's engines - it was very very close, then I saw the plane heading past our building, watched the blinking plane light, and thought that plane is going to crash. Then there was a huge explosion and fireball as it hit the ground. I can't imagine that anyone could have survived such an inferno. Prayers to all the poor souls.
