Election Polls 2010: Republican Rand Paul (55%) Democrat Beats Jack Conway (45%): CNN Projection (Live Twitter)
Based on early election results 2010, CNN is projecting that Rand Paul - the Tea Party backed son of Ron Paul - has won the race for Senator in Kentucky.
CNN based its projection with Rand Paul grabbing 55% of the votes, with Jack Conway picking up 45%, based on 13% of polls reporting returns.
Going into the Kentucky polls Rand Paul did not have the support of the Republican establishment but his popularity with Tea Party supporters helped Rand Paul secure the GOP nomination for Kentucky.
Local polls show Paul leading Conway in the race to replace retiring Sen. Jim Bunning (R). Paul has always been the central actor in this race's drama - Conway has struggled to define himself, except as an alternative to Paul, an opthamologist.
Paul became the face of the tea party movement's new ballot-box power when he beat Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the GOP primary, despite Grayson's backing from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
But soon after, the kind of outsider thinking that had made Paul a tea-party darling led him into trouble. He told a cable-TV host that he does not believe the government should force private businesses to abide by civil-rights laws. And he told an advocacy group that he supported replacing the national income tax with a 23 percent national sales tax.
