British seismologists say the 5.3-magnitude quake struck early today and was centered about 125 miles north of London. A spokesman for the British Geological survey says it was felt across all of England and the southern part of Scotland. He says it would qualify as an "average" quake in most of the world, but for Britain it was "very large."
A man about 60 miles from the epicenter tells The Associated Press "it was scary." He says a chest of drawers started wobbling and there was a loud rumbling noise.
