A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook Jammu and Kashmir on Friday morning.
The quake was felt at 0919 hrs in several parts of the state, including capital Srinagar, and areas bordering Pakistan, Met office said in New Delhi.
The quake shook buildings in Srinagar, sending residents rushing from their homes in panic, a correspondent said.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The USGS said the epicentre of the quake was 91 kilometres (57 miles) west of Srinagar and 93 kilometres northeast of the Pakistani capital Islamabad -- a mountain area marking the Line of Control.
