East Timor to issue arrest warrants after assassination bidsEAS
Dili (ANTARA News/AFP) - East Timor is set to issue arrest warrants for 18 suspects following assassination bids on the president and prime minister this week, a senior official said Wednesday.
"On this preliminary list there are 18 names and this number may still grow, depending on the progress of the case," prosecutor-general Longuinhos Monteiro told reporters at his office.
"The arrest warrants will be issued later today (Wednesday)... The names cannot be divulged before the court permits it," he added.
President Jose Ramos-Horta remains in serious condition in an Australian hospital after Monday's rebel attacks, from which Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao escaped unscathed.
Fugitive military leader Alfredo Reinado, whose breakaway sparked 2006 unrest which left at least 37 dead, was killed in the exchanges.
The attacks sparked fears of fresh unrest in the young nation where a state of emergency was declared and Australian troop reinforcements were brought in on Gusmao's request. (*) END
