Edit the bible and no Torahs for women at the Wailing Wall?
Piers Morgan, the host of a nightly talk show host on the cable channel CNN, believes we should edit the bible. I agree with him, we should. Or, at least ignore it. He said the bible and the U.S. Constitution are "inherently flawed." Well, the Constitution is a lot less flawed then the bible. The Constitution does not endorse rape, slavery, murder etc as does the bible.
At worst, the Constitution gives us the relic of the Electoral College and an absurd Senate system where North Dakota has the same number of senators as California, although California has over 50 times the population. We, the American people aren't made for the Constitution but it is made for us, we should never treat it like a a religious/sacred item.
By the way, if we do edit the bible, that leaves us with a couple of nice paragraphs by the maybe quasi-historical Jesus. More like a pamphlet, then a book at that point.
Oh, do you know that in Israel women cannot wear religious garb or carry a Jewish Torah book to pray at the Western (or Wailing) Wall? The Western Wall being one of the most important religious sites in Israeli. I was aghast when I read that this morning. Then I thought, well, much of Israel is controlled by Ultra-Orthodox Jews who have much more in common with hardline Islamic clerics in Saudi Arabia and Iran or Christian fundamentalists in the U.S., then their more secular fellow Jews in Israel.
There are many Reform Jews in Israel. If a Jewish female rabbi wants to pray in her garb while reading a Torah at the Western Wall, then the ultra fundamentalist types in Israel shouldn't be able to use the government to stop her.
By the way, in Israel only religious and not any civil/secular marriages are recognized. So in order to have your marriage recognized, you have to undergoe conversion to Orthodox Judaism, that is if you don't qualify as being Jewish enough. If you are a Reform Jew, you have to get married in an Orthodox wedding.
Don't even dare trying to get married to a Muslim woman, you will be denied like an interracial couple in 1952 Alabama. The question is, why are these absurd marriage bans/prohibitions allowed to stand in 2012 Israel? The fact is, Israel today is at the very least, a quasi-theocracy.
Before I go I must mention one Israeli. He is Gad Beck, a young Jewish man who had the guts to put on a Hitler Youth uniform during a Nazi roundup of Jews, to smuggle his friend out of a Nazi detention center. Wait, did I mention both of them are gay? Being gay was awful in Nazi Germany and being Jewish was even worse, but being gay and Jewish?
That he stayed throughout the war in Germany to supply food and shelter to Jews escaping to Switzerland just adds even more layers to this man. Mr. Beck died this year in 2012, there aren't many heroes of WWII left, especially like Gad Beck.
