Eiffel Tower Bomb Threat: Paris Landmark Evacuated (Video)
Eiffel Tower Evacuated after Bomb Threat
The Eiffel Tower was briefly evacuated after Paris police received a bomb threat. An unknown person phoned in the threat, which stated that the Eiffel Tower would be blown up at 5pm local time.
A suspicious package was found at the base of the tower. Around 4,000 tourists were evacuated from the area while police and military personnel scoured the Eiffel Tower and surrounding park. No explosives were found.
It is not yet clear if there was even a link between the suspicious package (which has not been further described) and the bomb threat.
France is particularly sensitive to terrorist threats at the moment, as President Nicolas Sarkosy recently championed a law that banned Muslim women from wearing full-face veils, and was was a leading force in getting the UN to approve western military intervention in Libya.
