NP Rank:
Elderly Couple Missing from Carnival Cruise Ship
An elderly couple is missing from a Carnival Cruise ship that sails out of California and are "presumed to have gone overboard."
A statement released overnight by Carnival says the 90-year-old man and his 79-year-old wife were aboard the Carnival Paradise when it set sail from the port on Monday but could not be found when the ship returned Friday."Their cabin door was double locked from the inside with a do not disturb sign on the handle and the door leading from the cabin to the balcony was unlocked," the statement says. "The couple’s personal belongings remained inside the cabin."
The cruise industry has experienced an unusual string of man-overboard cases in recent weeks, including an incident last Tuesday on a P&O Cruises ship. Before that an entertainer on the Carnival Sensation was seen falling overboard on New Year's Day, just a few days after a passenger apparently jumped from the Norwegian Dawn.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said the couple were last seen Tuesday night near their cabin. She said federal agents were interviewing passengers and crew and processing evidence. The cruise started in Long Beach and stopped in Santa Catalina Island and Ensenada. Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz said she did not know if the couple disembarked at either location.

Maybe I do not want to go on a cruise my next vacation. Seems like it is getting dangerous.

It is not dangerous , my family has been on 6 cruises. Many of these instances are attributed to suicide, and too much drinking. We have been on three different cruise lines and the rails are all pretty tall, you would have to deliberately go overboard or be way too unstable to walk to go over. The entertainer obviously was not very careful , he was leaning over the rail taking pictures.

Kind of sounds like it was on purpose doesn't it? How sad.

I kinda got that feeling too. The AP version says "believe to have fallen off a cruise ship."
Anyone that's been on a ship that size knows you don't just "fall off!"

Me three. Door double locked from the inside with a do not disturb sign doesn't sound like they just fell overboard. And their ages - 90 and 79 - a little old even for a cruise.

Perhaps they got lost looking for their Seniors Discount Coupons for the 1/2 price buffet.

Well i just got back from a Carnival Cruise, my second one in 2 years and i am unable to understand how these people are falling off, the only 2 ways i can see that happening is 1. people are committing suicide 2. they are being thrown off....
The rails on the cruises come up to my breast area and i am 5'4". I would have to climb on a chair to comfortably try and jump off a cruise ship. Unless you go on a cruise then you can see and understand how and possibly why these situations are occuring.
It is quite safe on a cruise ship and i have not had any reasons to say that it is unsafe. As i mentioned before, there are only 2 ways in my opinion as to how you can actually fall off a cruise ship, you either jump yourself somehow or someone you know... throws you off.
People on these ships are only there for one reason, have fun and on vacation. It seems others are using it for other reasons.

Wonder if its not another financial casualty and they planned to jump together. so sad.

oh my goodness i was on this ship. I didn't hear anything until i came home and someone told me about it. It was a beautiful sunny sailing week. Nothing that would show that they accidentally fall off. Most of the time I didn't even know that we were moving. We had a great time! So sad for the couple and their family.

My wife and I were on that cruise - best vacation of our lives!!! Carnival was great to us - no complaints at all. Don't blame the cruises for a couple's decision to commit suicide. The rails are too high to "just fall overboard".
Are you gonna walk to work since people die in car accidents every day? I'm sure your chances of dying in a auto accident are much higher than dying on a cruise.

an associate just got back from a Carvinal Cruise from Mexico, when they boarded, there were already 11 deaths that acurred on the cruise, and 1 man jumped overboard, and they had to turn around and go back to try and find him. Sounds like cruises are not the place to be lately.

Hey Rosemary, I've got to throw the BS flag on that one, 1 death and it runs all day on CNN, 11 and they'll make cruising a Reality Show.

Have been on 3 Carnival cruises with family and friends. The only way you are going overboard is to jump or do something totally stupid. Maybe they should give IQ tests before issuing tickets. Unbelievable.

Hey Rosemary, gotta throw the bull shit flag on that one......One death and it runs all day on CNN, 11 deaths and they'll make cruising a reality show.
