Election Day in Alaska. Again. 7 Oct 2008

We go to the polls again.  This time it is local offices.  City Council, Borough Assembly, School Board.  There are two cities locally, Fairbanks and North Pole, and one Borough, the Fairbanks North Star Borough (four open seats) , and one School Board (three seats open).  The Tax Cap is on the ballot again, along with some other measures depending on which district you are in.  The Tax Cap is in effect but needs to be renewed.  This is where the rubber meeets the road.  State of Alaska?  No, not today.  National USA, Washington DC?  No, not today.

The salient background fact is that political parties are forbidden by law today.  No Republicans, no Democrats, No Independents, No Greens, no AIP, none of the Politics, Inc or LLC.  It's just us.

By the Way, the School Board has the biggest part of the local budget and at the same time is the least noticed.  The Borough Assembly can say yes or no on the school budget but otherwise can't say much about it.

Update 8 Oct 2008

Done.  All positions were filled. Tax Cap is continued 2-1.  Turnout was about 12,000.  68,000 registered voters in the district, which seems high since the population is 96,000, but the lists aren't culled very often and the turnover is high.

Update some more 8 Oct 2008

Wasilla's five-way race for mayor ended in a deadlock Tuesday between candidates Marty Metiva and Verne Rupright. The two men, a nonprofit executive director and a defense attorney, will face off in an Oct. 28 runoff. . . .

Maybe the winner will go on to become President or something.

Thanks all for taking a look at this.  Turnout is very light this morning, but these are the people who make our municipal budgets and assess our property tax (which you are qualified to pay whether you have a job or not) and quite often somebody is running because he is 'Mad as Hell and Not Going to Take It Anymore.'

Fairbanks, I like this story. "It's just us" , what counts is reliable friendship, living with each others differences, but acting together as neighbours, when it is necessary. Why not uploading 2 or 3 photos from your city Fairbanks, would enrich our world view.
