There were 4 by-elections today in Canada, 2 in Ontario, 1 in Sask., and one in BC (in my riding as it happens). The Canadian Liberal has won the 2 in Ont, lost in Sask, and are in a head to head battle with the Conservative candidate in BC. The Liberal candidate, Joyce Murray, won in the Vancouver quadra.

Liberal candidates took strong early leads in two Toronto-area byelections Monday but looked to be in a tough fight against the Conservatives in Saskatchewan.

In Vancouver Quadra, Liberal candidate Joyce Murray, a former provincial environment minister, defeated Conservative Deborah Meredith in a close race in a riding that has been held by Liberals since former prime minister John Turner won there in 1984.

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion was hoping to hang on to all four ridings and bolster his "dream team" with the winners, including Bob Rae and Martha Hall Findlay, both former leadership rivals.
