NP Rank:
Eleven killed as violence intensifies in Sri Lanka
Fight between Sri Lankan forces and rebel Tamils have become fierce and killed many people. Tamil rebels have been fighting long for a separate homeland for long time.
At least 10 Tamil Tiger rebels died during battles with government troops and a policeman was shot dead in Sri Lanka's restive north, the defence ministry said on Tuesday.
The sporadic clashes took place around the embattled Vavuniya district on Monday, the ministry said but did not give casualty figures for their own troops.
The policeman was killed and another wounded in a shoot out at the eastern lagoon district of Batticaloa on Monday the military said, blaming the attack on the rebels.
There was no immediate comment from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who have been locked in armed combat with the Colombo-based government in seeking autonomy in the island's north and east.
The latest round of fighting raises the number of LTTE cadres killed by Sri Lankan troops to 3,614, according to the defence ministry, while 272 security force personnel have died over the same period.
