Elizabeth Wong Bounces Back Stronger After Political Rape
Prominent Malaysian human rights activist Elizabeth Wong has bounced back
stronger after her political rape.
She will resume her duties as Selangor Executive Council Member for Tourism,Environment and Consumers Affairs and Bukit Lanjan State Assemblywoman today(April 16,2009).
Elizabeth Wong Keat Ping,37,has apparently recovered from the political storm after nude images of her were circulated on the internet and via MMS since February 16,2009.
After a two-month hiatus in which she had pleaded for support and understanding to allow her time and space to overcome her initial shock and anguish, she has retracted her earlier offer to resign from both political posts.
Stressing her decision as "the hardest that I have to make in my life", she said:
"It is with the greatest humility that I accept the Selangor state's offer to remain in office.
Elizabeth suggested the circulation of her nude images was "not a scandal but a clear criminal act".
"This is no less a form of criminal intimidation, a form of political violence and one which,if I choose to retreat into silence, would in turn indirectly affect women, especially women politicians.
"Gutter politics is not and should not be a part of our political culture, and for those who depend on exploiting and supporting such a crime,is an indication of the politicians and persons they are," she added.
Instead of causing her damage,Elizabeth Wong's nude expose has won her tremendous
public sympathy and support.
The nude photographs, apparently taken by her Malay ex-boy friend Hilmi Malek with a handphone while she was asleep, are not that sexually explicit.
Apparently, the crime was done without her knowledge. It tantamounts to gross invasion of privacy and gross outrage of modesty of a single woman.
Announcing the unanimous decision of the Selangor Executive Council to retain her,
Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim yesterday(April 15,2009) stressed Elizabeth Wong was a victim of a despicable character.
The Selangor PKR leader said Selangor Sultan had consented to Elizabeth Wong's
retention in her two state posts.
In fact, it was considered right and fair for her to resume her duties as she "had done nothing wrong" and "broken no law".
The Selangor ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, had earlier decided to stay above politics, expressing his grave concern over the intrusion of privacy.
He conveyed his sincere sympathy to Elizabeth Wong over her ordeal and his kind understanding that she would overcome her distress after she fled the country to find peace of mind as the nude images were being circulated.
Describing her past two months as "more than an ordeal", Elizabeth Wong said:
"I have been stripped bare - figuratively and literally - by force and against my will.
"My personal life has been violated and assaulted by none other than criminals.
"Even up to this evening,I continue to receive threats from unknown persons," she added in a statement yesterday.
Elizabeth Wong expressed her determination to serve the people and the state.
The shocking circulation of her nude images was clearly done by unprincipled politicians.
Hilmi is merely a political mole planted into PKR and Petaling Jaya Selatan MP Hee Loy Sian's office to get close to Elizabeth Wong.
Hilmi helped Hee as an aide for nine months. He left after he befriended Elizabeth Wong and snapped her nude pictures in various intimate positions.
He was believed to have gone to Indonesia.Police have sought the help of Interpol to trace his whereabouts. They have also contacted his father to ask him to report to police and assist in the probe into how and why Elizabeth Wong's nude photographs were taken and spread online and via MMS.
Elizabeth is a capable and outspoken champion of human rights. She has served as former secretary-general of Malaysian Human Rights Society and parliamentary aide
to Datin Seri Dr. Wan Azizah, wife of People Alliance de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The People Alliance aims to take over the government of Malaysia.
Its combined strength enabled it to capture five states - Penang,Kedah,Perak,Selangor and Kelantan - and terminated the two-third majority control of the Malaysian parliament by the National Front in last year's March 8 political tsunami.
In four of the five by-elections since then, Malaysian voters have supported People Alliance in Permatang Puah,Penang; Kuala Trengganu, capital of Trengganu;Bukit Gantang,Perak and Bukit Selambau,Kedah.
Elizabeth Wong is a key PKR leader holding the post of Women Information Chief.
She won the Bukit Lanjan state seat with a big majority of 5,155 votes, defeating
Datin Yong Dai Ying of National Front in last year's March 8 General Election.
She has been involved in human rights activities since her student days in Sydney and her work in Nepal.
Now that Elizabeth Wong has returned to resume her political struggle, she can step up her great work to sweep out unscrupulous and corrupt politicians exposing them in their true colors and maladministration.
Among her top priorities must be effective campaigns to repel the draconian Internal Security Act(ISA) that gives the ruling regime excessive powers to detain political rivals without trial, proper law to stop invasion of privacy and human rights acts to rectify the racial discrimination in the public service like recruitment and promotion in the police force, military and government-controlled public companies including Petronas,Sime Darby and others and removal of Public Service Department scholarships award quotas.
She can also take up tendentious issues of religious deviation, gender, ethnic and class injustices in line with her People Justice Party's philosophy of promoting justice, right and democracy.
Her political enemies would try their best to undermine her and her party to stop the political trend for change in Malaysian new political landscape and positive culture towards a better Malaysian government and society based on meritocracy.
So Elizabeth Wong has to be on top of her act and not let anyone take her pictures
at her most vulnerable positions. She cannot just sleep without first making sure adequate security measures are in place to prevent intruders from getting into her room and invading her privacy again!
