Elsie Poncher, a widow from the United States, decided to auction off her late husband Richard Poncher's grave plot directly above the plot of American movie star Marilyn Monroe on eBay. Monroe died in 1962 and was buried at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Poncher said she needs to pay off her $1.6 million mortgage, so selling her husband's crypt space next to the world's sexiest woman seemed like a cashable alternative. Poncher plans to exhume her husband's remains and move them to a different spot. So far, the highest bid on eBay for Poncher's spot is $4.5 million. Bidding ends on August 24, 2009.

"Spend eternity directly above Marilyn Monroe", says the ad placed on eBay by Elsie Poncher of Beverly Hills.
"I can't be more honest than that," she said. "I want to leave it free and clear for my kids."
Mrs Poncher says her husband's remains will be moved over one spot into the crypt intended for her, while she will be cremated when the time comes.

Here the text of the ad:

Here is a once in a lifetime and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe.  This crypt in the famous Westwood Cemetary in West Los Angeles currently occupied above Marilyn Monroe is being vacated so as to make room for a new resident. "Spending Eternity next to Marilyn Monroe is too sweet to pass up", recently quoted by Hugh Heffner, who has reserved his place in eternity next to her.  The lucky bidder will be deeded a piece of real estate that he or she will make their last address. And below you will be Marilyn Monroe.  In fact the person occupying the address right now is looking face down on her.

Monroe memorabilia is in high demand lately. Just recently, Marilyn Monroe's bra was offered for sale for $5,200 at London auction. Earlier this year, Monroe's receipts for alcohol and the bath robe that was allegedly the last piece of clothing she ever wore were also put up for auction.
