Eman al-Obeidy: Freed but Living in Fear

Eman al-Obeidy, who became the face of the anti-government movement in Libya after telling foreign press in Tripoli about how she was raped by Gaddafi loyalists, has been freed from custody. Howver, her troubles have apparently not ended.

LIBYAN WOMAN CLAIMS RAPE BY LIBYAN GOVT_ AGENTS 26 3 11

Eman al-Obeidy (also spelled Iman al-Obeidi) told CNN that, after 72 hours of abusive questioning at the hands of the police, a medical exam proved that she had been raped. She said that she does not leave her house, because police harrass her in the street whenever she emerges.

Al-Obeidy told NPR that the police have beaten her several times since she had been freed from detention. She says that Libyan TV is smearing her reputation on the air, calling her a prostitute. The Libyan government says it will sue her for slander. In the conflicting stories from a 26-year-old lawyer and a brutal, autocratic regime, foreign media has chosen which version to believe, tacitly or otherwise.

Al-Obeidy said that in contrast with the brutality she endured at the hands of Gadhafi loyalists, her treatment after being taken from the hotel was more abusive psychologically than it was physically.

I agree with Anmar, and I also beliieve and pray to the one God of the universe that international groups step in and help this girl. Her life and blood are in the balance - woe be unto the world if she is left to these jackals.

GOD was created by Man to enforce his sexual gratification upon women - Its True

CNN, April 5, 2011 “The attempt to discredit al-Obeidy as a promiscuous, un-Islamic woman ties into the idea of sexual shaming in a conservative Muslim society where it's commonly believed that a woman who has been raped has lost her honor, said Mona Eltahawy, a columnist on Arab and Muslim issues.”

NYT, April 4,2011 Bangladesh: Islamist Strike Shuts Cities:, “Schools and businesses were shut in the main cities on Monday as a hard-line Islamist group enforced a general strike demanding the adoption of Islamic law and the scrapping of a new government policy that gives women equal rights to inheritance.”

I have come to the conclusion GOD is in fact a tool by which Man has been able to enforce his sexual gratification upon women and subject women to Mans will.

What better way than having women believe a supreme power and not something as unimpressive or unconvincing as Man demands women be subject to Mans wants.

God clearly was and is a trick.

Not being able to rationally convince women they should be subject to Mans whim some misogynistic male bright spark happened across frightening women with the unknown as a way of getting what he wanted – God.

What better foil – It’s not me a mere male it is God the Supreme Authority who has given me authority over you – dare you disobey God the Almighty? – apart from me smiting you down wait until Gods finished with you.

Probably invented on Aprils fools day 10,000 BL (Before Logic)

We really have to rewrite religious text and the secular based on it to get rid of this very bad joke once and for all.

So all this time you thought as I had there was some noble rather than utilitarian point to GOD - turns out sadly GOD is simply another deceitful advertising gimmick devised by Man for self-serving reasons to sucker in the venerable.

Also please note there appears to be a direct correlation between the level of subjugation of women in a religion and the amount of fear and terror required to maintain it. In other words the greater the relative independence of women in any societal construct the greater the reduction in violence projected internally and externally to maintain the societal structure. i.e. Increased women’s rights = Increased security and peaceful coexistence for all.

@markjuliansmith, you need to do more research and you need to stop gobbling up everything that the current institutions, media and pop culture feeds you, without question. Women and minorities have faced much more oppression and discrimination without religion and God.  Many women were killed at birth (in many cultures) before the people came to know God and religion...Apatheid had nothing to do with God and religion..African slaves, brought to America by force, had nothing to do with religion and God. Sure, there is still, discrimination amongst religions and amongst religous people, but your argument is simplistic at best. Human beings need to become more moral, more fair, more respectful and more tolerant to all people (religous, athiest, or agnostic).  Research has proven that people who are moderately religous, and people who attend Church, Synagogue, Mosque etc. on a regular basis are healthier and happier people.  There is a positive correlation with regular Church attendance and health.  Children who are raised with faith and religion are less likely to experiment with drugs, they are physically healthier, and the same goes for their parents.  Childeren who are raised with moderate religion in their homes are less likely to have teenage pregnancies later on, and they are less likely to have criminal records in the future.  There is a strong positive correlation with moderate religion, Church attendance and health.  Religion and God in moderation is very healthy and good for society.

I am no fan of Gaddafi, but I am not going to believe (fully) in anything that the media reports.  This story reminds me of that woman in Kuwait who was crying to international TV reporters and saying that the Iraqi troops came into the hospital and "took babies out of their incubators".  We all believed this story, how could we not?  Who would make up such a thing?  We were horrified by this story and rightfully so.  But, the tears turned out to be fake. That Kuwaiti woman turnded out to be a liar and she should have been an Academy Award for her peformance.   I pray for this woman, for her family and for all of the people of the Middle East.  I hope and pray for freedom and justice for all in the Middle East and everywhere.
