Emily Staupe Dies From Cyanide: Leaves Final Facebook Post

Emily Staupe is Suspected to Have Committed Suicide By Cyanide After Losing Her Job Just One Day Before
Emily Staupe worked as a Northeastern University lab technician, who lost her job last Friday.
On Saturday it is thought that she took a train to Northeastern, entered a lab there with her keys and took some crystallized cyanide; she was in such a rush that she locked the door and left her keys behind in the lab.
The Boston Herald reports that she asked her father and brother to pick her up from the commuter rail station in Westwood and then hours later it is thought that she committed suicide in her bedroom with the cyanide. She was dead when the police arrived on the scene.
“Each one of you has made my life special,” a friend said she wrote, just a few hours before her family found her dead in her bedroom, police said.
Her friends and co-workers are stunned at the news, saying that Emily Staupe was a 'devoted friend and a great scientist'. A former co-worker Natalia Diaz, said she spoke to Emily last Friday night and although she was unsure of what she was going to do now that she had lost her job, Diaz said she sounded fine.
“She was a lovely girl, smart, on the honor roll,” said Ann Sartain, a longtime neighbor. “I don’t know why she would do such a thing.”
Her death has raised fears that access to deadly chemicals such as cyanide may be too easy and the Herald reports that her ability to access the lab "shines a light on the problem of lax security at universities across the country."
“If she’d been a bad guy and gotten hold of a significant amount of cyanide . . . who knows?” Livingstone said. “Cyanide is a good weapon of assassination or for killing a small number of people.”
It is not known however, if Staupe managed to take all the cyanide at once of in steps.
An investigation into her death has been opened, but there are many questions remaining.
“The Northeastern community mourns the tragic and untimely loss of Emily Staupe,” the school said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Emily’s family and friends during this difficult time. As there is an ongoing investigation of Emily’s death, it is inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
