Several people were shot near the Empire State Building on Friday, August 24, 2012. The latest estimate states 10 people were shot in the incident, including the gunman who is believed to be dead. Another victim may also have been fatally shot. [Update: two people were killed in the shooting, including gunman Jeffrey Johnson.]

Details are still sketchy at this point, but it is believed that the Empire State Building shooting is not being treated as an act of terrorism. It may have stemmed from a work dispute. The shooting took place after 9 a.m. at the intersection of 34th Street and Fifth Avenue.

The name of the shooter has not been released.

UPDATE: The Empire State Building shooter has been identified as 53-year-old Jeffrey Johnson.
