NP Rank:
The end of news gathering for web communities?
Murdock has sent a signal that could relate to big copyright problems on the internet. That signal being charging for news on the internet, of course News Corp’s is only a part of news providing services on the internet. But what if other free providers follow suit and see a way to earn more revenue?
If members of news communities seed news from a paid source, it would not take long for companies such as News Corps to file copyright proceedings. However that could not stop real citizen journalism only seeding from a paid service.
In one sense maybe paid media services would be better not to seal their copyrights as of course members of news communities would have to pay to get access to the news. However it would seem that public owned news services like the BBC would be still offering up to date news for free.
My thoughts about Murdock’s plan is that at the end of the day it will come to no success, as less people would use the News Corps services and there will be a loss of advertising revenue. Murdock will not increase his companies’ profit's, I for one will keep away from his sites as I really like the word “free”

There have of course been many attempts by news organizations in the past to wall their content behind subscriptions, yet almost none have succeeded (the WSJ and Consumer Reports being two notable exceptions), especially for general interest news. I can see it working for highly specialized information, but not for most of what News Corp. publishes.
