SCIENTISTS try to stop big bang experiment as they say black holes created may destroy us within 50 years, starting Sept-10

SCIENTISTS are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world.
Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.

The machine is 17 miles long and cost £4.4billion to create.

When its switch is pulled on September 10, this atom-smasher will become a virtual time machine, revealing what happened when the universe came into existence 14 billion years ago.

New particles of matter are expected to be discovered, new dimensions found beyond the four known, as scientists re-create conditions in the first BILLIONTHS of a second after the Big Bang.

Experts even predict that millions of tiny black holes will be produced — baby brothers of the monsters gobbling up dust and stars at the heart of the galaxies.
Secrets
That is why boffins are now trying to stop the project with a last-ditch challenge in the courts.

They fear the LHC experimenters are tinkering with the unknown and putting mankind — and our whole planet — at risk.

The group responsible for the experiment, the European Nuclear Research Centre (CERN), says that these mini black holes will vanish as quickly as they are created.

But the anti-CERN brigade accuse the scientists of playing God, warning that no one can guarantee that the black holes will not survive, rapidly growing in size to suck the Earth out of existence in an instant.

But CERN, which includes several UK scientists, say their work is vital to unlock the secrets of matter that forms everything known in the universe.

In the experiment, atomic particles will be fired in opposite directions along the 17-mile long underground ring — the length of the Circle Line on the London Underground.

They will travel so fast that they make 11,245 trips around the tunnel every SECOND.

From the collisions, boffins expect to discover a fundamental bit of the atom, called the Higgs boson, that is expected to exist but which has never been seen.

Professor Otto Rossler, from the Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen in Germany, is one of the scientists mounting the legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights against 20 countries which are funding the project.

He said: “It is quite plausible that these little black holes will survive and will grow and eat the planet from the inside out.”

A CERN spokesman said: “It will not be producing anything that does not already happen routinely in nature.”

Well, the collider experiment itself is certainly real, as are the attempts to stop it.

Whether the creation of these atoms could lead to any potential danger in the future, well that's debateable. As for the people saying the scientists should be shot...yikes!

Reminds me a little too much of how scientists were treated in the 18th and 19th centuries...held by the church or hanged.

Rob Walker, good point for scientists, thanks. I see it like first time radioactivity explored by the couple Curie. They did not know this radiation (could not see it) later they died of it. the Atoms are monsters compared to the little "particles" searched now. The byproducts may be unknown during collider first time use and are not to see. Who ever can find a mini black hole hiding in the middle of the earth ( kept somehow by the magnetic field) We can not say if it is here or not here. We are dealing "popular science" with the "particles of god". So how will the Universe react to our knoccking at the door? More practical is the question, whenever a blackhole process is understood, could it one day suck a hurricane in the black hole neutralizing It? Thanks for the interest in the article. But it is a civil society matter, what to do or not. Scientists created the nuclear bomb. What exactly they planning here, we don't know it yet.

Hi owen, you might not, thanks for writing. The article descripes more a legal point, what to do or not. It's difficult to see the big collider, all that effort to produce for a millisecond something that could be called a mini black hole. I think there is no danger, but should be better discussed in public. For example I saw no TV show upfront on this theme.

Anti cern do bring up a good point that its not right based on the opinion that it goes againts are human rights. But the only way to know for sure is to do. What I dont understand why didnt CERN try to do this project off planet for instance a space station somewhere else in the cosmos. Hell, if we dont in next few days we always have 2012 to look for.

Surely all the European countries, or even general world countries could rebel against this?

Of course it will be an amazing discovery, but the Swiss inventors have no right to play with life like that. Its Russian Roulette with the whole of humanity.

In my opinion, there are limits to what Man can discover, and this is definately a fine example of something which is out-of-bounds.
