England vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 Video Highlights - Ashes 2013
England vs Australia Video Highlights of Australia tour of England 2013, 5th Ashes Test Day 1 Match on August 21st played at Kennington Oval, London. Shane Watson amassed a much-need 176 as he guided Australia to a solid total of 4-307 on the first day of the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval.
It was a dominant performance from Australia's make-shift number three, who paid little respect to England's attack, in particular debutant Simon Kerrigan (0-53).
Watson's first Ashes ton came off 114 balls, but slowed considerably after the milestone as he looked to build a big score.
He received solid support at the other end from both Chris Rogers (23 from 100) and Steven Smith (66 not out).
Jimmy Anderson (2 for 18) made the early breakthrough for England, snaring David Warner caught behind for just six runs.
Rogers was then happy to play the role of anchor, but was dismissed just after lunch when he was caught by Jonathan Trott in first slip off a tweaker from Graeme Swann (1 for 71).
Skipper Michael Clarke was next to the crease, but didn't last long before he was brought undone by an Anderson seamer that jagged back and caught his front pad before hitting off-stump.
Steven Smith looked anything but comfortable in the middle at the beginning of his dig, but he was determined to play with aggression - at one stage lifting Swann for a straight six.
He and Watson put on 144 for the third wicket to put Australia in a dominant position at stumps on day one.
Watson will be kicking himself for being dismissed just overs from the end of play when he pulled Broad to deep square leg where Kevin Pietersen made a quality stretching catch to his left.
Smith will resume with nightwatchman Peter Siddle (18*) on day two when he will look to make his first Test century.
