What is the EDL?

The English Defence League (EDL) has stepped up its activities in the wake of the UK riots. Xenophobia simmers under the surface of British life, if we're honest, and the riots are just the excuse that the EDL (think of them as National Front 2.0) thinks it needs to gain ground with the workaday English populace.

The EDL is a right-wing racist group that professes to oppose the "Islamification" of Britain. They organize what they claim are peaceful marches in Muslim immigrant areas across the UK, which are basically orchestrated to cause trouble, which they can then blame on the immigrants themselves.

While the English Defence League swears that it isn't racist, evidence suggests otherwise.

The EDL has been trying to organize marches in the wake of the recent unrest, but it's unclear how these are supposed to be constructive. Some of those EDL marches have already been banned.
