EPA Law Effective April, Home Repairs May Have To Be Put On Hold

Home-owners may find themselves unable to complete home repairs or re models after April 22nd.

A New law that requires Contractors repairing or painting homes made before 1978 or facilities occupied by children comes into effect on April 22, 2010.

The law requires that contractors be certified and trained in lead-safe work practices. The EPA began processing applications on October 22, 2009 for the ruling originally issued by the EPA on April 22, 2008.

Contractors must also provide owners, tenants, and child-care facilities with a copy of EPA's lead hazard information pamphlet.

Contractors who fail to comply face large fines.

It may be hard to find a qualified remodeler due to a shortage of accredited trainers if the ruling goes into effect as planned according to The National Association of Home Builders.

this is relevant to me. i have a house built in 1900. it needs severe work done. i have applied for a low income (i'm basically destitute and on disability) loan from the government to do house repairs to make it code-safe (like replace a nightmare of electrical wiring that an inspector (had i had it inspected like i ought to have) would have revealed to be illegal).

thanks for posting this. now i worry that my approval and work needed on my craphole house might not get done. it's important to know, but distressing. i need to repair the mess the previous owners hid from me (a naive first time buyer under pressure to compromise and buy a house quickly). i need to repair it and sell it for enough to pay my many debts and move to an area that's not so conservative and creepy (the area is a hate zone if you're at all "different").

another possible roadblock: this new law.

Ummm, Dysamoria, it isn't a conservative administration that is causing you grief. It is the same party that has been in power for THREE YEARS (including the last 2 of President Bush's), you know, DEMOCRATS (just like you). Better be calling your pals at the White House, you know, the ones you elected. Maybe they will fix your house along with giving you free health care and paying your mortgage.

If a house is empty (has been for 6 months) and is up for sale, do you still have to follow the EPA lead regulations before removing wallpaper and painting? House was owned by a 93 year old man, hasn't been updated in over 40 years.
