Rahul Gandhi and YSRCongress general secretary Rahul Gandhi has slammed the erstwhile Telugu Desam government, saying it failed to address the problems of the ‘aam aadmi’ and sadly neglected the farmers' plight.

Addressing public meetings in Ankapalle and Visakhapatnam on Thursday with “Mee andariki namaskaram’, he said, “They believed in building Hyderabad. We believe in building Hyderabad. But we also believe in building Andhra Pradesh.  We believe in taking the success of Hyderabad to the rest of Andhra Pradesh.”

Asserting that the common man had always been the party’s focus, he said, “We see India from the common man’s eyes. Our programmes are for the poor of India. Our thinking is to take forward the poor of the country. Our opposition does not see the world from the eyes of the poor. They do not care what the poor think and what they want. If you have to fight for the poor you have to reach their homes and talk to them and see the world from their eyes.”

The young Congress turk said the UPA government will never ignore the voice of the poor while moving on the path towards growth and development unlike the previous NDA government.  Terming the opposition parties as power hungry, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress-led UPA was focusing on speedy development and prosperity of all sections of society.

"The aim of the opposition parties is to grab power by making hollow promises, while Congress always fulfils its commitment to ensure balanced and speedy development," he said. Stating that the real India was in the villages, he said, “we are proud of the India that is poor while the opposition parties are ashamed of the poor. We want the poor not to remain poor anymore. There is no other important issue in this country other than poverty.”

Claiming that the UPA had brought smiles on the faces of the farmers, the poor and tribals, he said the NREGS would go a long way in removing poverty by providing jobs in villages. Terming the NREGS and mid-day meal scheme as historic, he said while the NREGS ensured 100 days of work to the rural poor, the mid-day meal scheme encouraged the rural poor to send children to school.
