One of the cool things about this airport was that it was built with bomb shelters for people, and storage bunkers for goods and documents.
In the bomb shelters for people, there were steel doors and huge thick concrete walls (it's about 3 stories underground) that you closed behind you during bombing raids. However, should those doors be blocked, you couldn't get out. Subsequently, this was an escape hatch - with stairs to the surface. The window at the top would have been a steel door - that opened inward - to let those inside get out.
