Pirate showdown off Somalia
A Russian warship steams toward a confrontation with pirates off Somalia.
The European Union has agreed to establish an anti-piracy security operation off the coast of Somalia.French Defence Minister Herve Morin said at least eight countries have agreed to take part.
The deal follows the seizure of a ship laden with 33 tanks - a $20m (£11m) ransom is wanted for its release.
Meanwhile, authorities in Kenya have charged a maritime official who said that the battle tanks were destined for southern Sudan, rather than Kenya.

Thanks for Flag amyjudd, "hopefully it makes a difference." .."europe chasing somali pirates". Sarkozy will love it. He once ordered to capture a high speed cruise ship by helicopter at he french riviera. The Union workers had been for days hiding in front of the coast to ask for more money. Finally surprised be the helicopter crew arriving at night, jumping on the vessel, taking control, bringing it back to the port.

It was only a matter of time before the situation reached that point where nations benefit from military action against pirates. In this case, the decision is easier because of the pirates' location: Somalia doesn't have a functioning government (other than on paper), so the pirates are pretty much on their own. It's to their benefit in day-to-day piracy biz, but not so much when warships are closing in.
