Europe's Leaders Congratulate Obama
Europe awoke to the news this morning that Barack Obama had been elected president of the United States. Reaction around the world has been positive, but the reception to the news in Europe by the public and politians alike has been particularly enthusiastic.
UK prime minister Gordon Brown was the first to congratulate Obama.
Gordon Brown has congratulated Barack Obama on his election and said they would work together to get Britain and the US out of the economic downturn.
"I have just sent my warmest congratulations to Senator Obama on his election as president of the United States of America and I have also sent my best wishes to Michelle and his family," the Prime Minister said.
"This is a moment that will live in history as long as history books are written."
Ireland's leader went a step further an invited Obama to visit his ancestral homeland in Ireland. Obama's mother traces her ancestry to Ireland.
US President-elect Barack Obama has been invited to his Irish ancestral home by Taoiseach Brian Cowen.
Mr Cowen made the invite as he formally welcomed the historic election victory.
Records show Barack Obama's maternal ancestors lived in the Moneygall area of County Offaly more than 150 years ago.
In a statement, Mr Cowen said he was looking forward to "building on the existing deep and cherished ties between our two countries."
Meanwhile, the US Consul in Belfast, Susan Elliott, said it was likely there would be new ambassadors in London and Dublin.

Dave Keating, I like this story. It's good stuff, although I miss the reaction of the Dutch and German politicians :-) but maybe I'm biased?
So here my prime-minister Balkende's remark: Het was mooi om te zien dat deze verkiezing miljoenen mensen in beroering heeft gebracht in de VS, maar ook daarbuiten (translated by Google: It was nice to see that this election has placed upheavals to millions of people in in the U.S. but also elsewhere)
