No matter which decade, when it comes to politicians there is usually at least one sex or prostitution scandal in their skeleton closet.  However, this time, the scandal centers around the man who presided as International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director between 2007 - 2011 - Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who is also a French economist and lawyer.

Previous positions in his career have included, Minister for Industry and Foreign Trade (1991 - 1993) and Minister for Economics, Finances and Industry (1997 - 1999), till his appointment to the IMF.

His resignation came as a result of a sexual assault case, (forced oral sex) brought against him by 32 year old maid Nafissatou Diallo at the Sofitel New York Hotel.    His bail was set at US$1,000,000.  The charges were eventually dropped due to Diallo being labeled as "an unreliable witness", even though a semen sample on her shirt matched that of Strauss-Kahn.  The reason the African immigrant gave was that the translator misunderstood her words.

Diallo now intends to pursue the case in a civil lawsuit.

Fast forward to the present.  Strauss-Kahn is currently being questioned in connection with a hotel prostitution ring, operating in both France and Belgium. This was the man who hoped one day to be President of his country.

62 year old, silver haired Strauss-Kahn has company, police and other officials are also implicated (unnamed).  According to one of his lawyers Henri Leclerc, Strauss-Kahn believed he was attending orgies, not having sex with prostitutes.

Leclerc told French radio Europe 1 (stating the obvious):

Quote

He could easily not have known, because as you can imagine, at these kinds of parties you're not always dressed, and I challenge you to distinguish a naked prostitute from any other naked woman. [...] the sexual encounter was "inappropriate" but not violent.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn

Like all high profile crime cases, the press have dubbed this one with a name - which is now known as the "Carlton Affair", named after the hotel where some of the 'liaisons' occurred.

Dominique Alderweireld, also known as "Dodo la Saumure," is a Belgian pimp who told Europe 1 radio:

Quote

Strauss-Kahn might not have given much thought to who, if anyone, had paid the women at the parties. [...] It wasn't his problem. All he was interested in was having sex. That's it.
by Dominique Alderweireld

The ex-IMF chief has had this to say:

Quote

It was not only an inappropriate relationship, but more than that, it was a failing ... a failing vis-a-vis my wife, my children and my friends but also a failing vis-a-vis the French people, who had vested their hopes for change in me.
Dominque Strauss-Kahn
