ABC News has obtained an exclusive photo of suicide bomber Humam Muhammed al-Balawi, the Jordanian double agent who killed seven CIA operatives and his Jordanian handler in Afghanistan on December 30.

Al-Balawi, a 32-year-old Jordanian doctor, had convinced the Americans that his jihadist postings on the web were only part of his cover identity. He ambushed 13 CIA operatives, including the CIA Station Chief  and his handler at Camp Chapman, an American forward operating base in Afghanistan, by promising to share information on the whereabouts of al Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri.

An exclusive photo obtained by ABC News shows Humam Khalil Muhammed al Balawi, identified as suicide bomber who killed seven C.I.A. agents and his handler at Forward Operating Base Chapman near Khost city, Afghanistan, on Dec. 30, 2009. (ABC News)

Al-Balawi, a 32-year-old Jordanian doctor, had convinced the Americans that his jihadist postings on the web were only part of his cover identity. He lured 13 CIA operatives and his handler to a meeting at Camp Chapman, an American forward operating base in Afghanistan, by saying he had just met with al Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri and had information to share.

The photo comes from a Jordanian identification card, seen below. Al Balawi was born in Kuwait in 1977, raised in Jordan and attended medical school in Turkey. He had been arrested by Jordan's intelligence agency, the General Intelligence Directorate, more than a year ago. Believing they had flipped al Balawi and made him a double agent, the Jordanians released him from prison and sent him to Afghanistan to penetrate al Qaeda by pretending to be an aspiring foreign jihadi.

Jordanian Bomber's Path Remains a Mystery to His Family

Mother of 'Jordan bomber' says he was no extremist

"We hear the news about my son Humam Khalil Mohammed al-Balawi but I don't know if he is dead or not," Shanara Fadel al-Balawi, 64, told AFP.

"He prayed and read the Koran but was never an extremist. He never shared extremist views."

"My son was conscientious. He was a good student at a Jordanian public school," his mother said.

"He applied last year for an American visa to study in the United States, and even paid fees," she said, without being able to confirm if her son had been granted the visa.

"He told us he was going to Turkey to get his original diploma, in late February. But we realised he never went then to Turkey," she said

Balawi's Turkish wife told the NTV news channel that she did not believe her husband worked for any intelligence agency.

"My husband definitely cannot be an agent for the CIA or Jordan because he was a man who would not even leave the house. I do not believe my husband could have done this," Defne Bayrak said.

"He never told me of such a thing and I do not think that is the case."

Bayrak said that Balawi, whom she married nine years ago, did not go to Afghanistan, but went to Pakistan to pursue medical studies.

"He wanted to study to become a surgeon. We knew that he got himself a job when he could not sort out his study plans.

"We last spoke on the phone about one-and-a-half months ago. It was a normal conversation. He talked about coming to Turkey... He had told us to go to Turkey and that he would come soon," she said.

According to Balawi's mother, Bayrak and her son met while he was studying medicine in Turkey. The couple have two children, Laila and Lina.

They also lived in Jordan for a while where Balawi worked in a hospital in a Palestinian refugee camp and Bayrak translated books from Arabic into Turkish.

CIA attacker ranked best Al-Qaeda informant in years: report

Balawi had established his credibility by feeding his Jordanian supervisor a series of tips about Al-Qaeda that checked out and built up so much trust with Jordanian and US intelligence that he was not properly searched when he entered Forward Operating Base Chapman for a meeting with CIA operatives.

While working as an informant, he had contributed anti-American essays to jihadist websites under the name Abu Dujana al-Khorasan, purportedly to maintain contacts and gather information.

But officials told the newspaper that the views he expressed online turned out to represent his real beliefs.

Relatives told AFP that Balawi had been radicalised by the devastating offensive which Israel launched on Gaza in December 2008.

"The Israeli military operation in Gaza affected Humam and he wanted to join doctors of the Jordan Medical Association as a volunteer and go to Gaza," said his brother asking for his given name to be withheld.

"Humam was angry because of the crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.

"In February, he told us he was going to Turkey, but his Turkish wife has not seen him and we have not heard from him ... not even a call, or mail," he added.

"We thought he was in Gaza, We were worried."

The attack was the deadliest against the CIA since 1983.

It has been followed by a barrage of criticism of the CIA, including from the top US military intelligence official in Afghanistan, who accused the agency of poor intelligence-gathering.
